Why the Service Company of the 501st PIR?

My Uncle, Walter Kagle.  

He severed from D-Day through the end of the war in Europe with the Service Company of the 501st.  It was this picture of him, that was always displayed in my Grandmother's living room, that sparked my interest in History.
